Privacy Policy

Last updated August 2026

RoomRight ("RoomRight", "we", "us") helps people find compatible roommates. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use and protect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. By creating an account or using the app, you agree to the practices described here.

Information we collect

We only collect information needed to run RoomRight and match you with compatible roommates.

  • Account information: your name and email address, provided directly or through Sign in with Apple or Google.
  • Age: your date of birth, used solely to confirm you are 18 or older and is required to use RoomRight.
  • Profile and questionnaire answers: your housing preferences (such as preferred locations, budget, move-in timing) and lifestyle answers used for matching.
  • Sensitive information you choose to provide: this may include gender, ethnicity, religion, languages, dietary or food preferences, pets, and substance-use habits. You are never required to share sensitive details you are not comfortable providing.
  • Photos and bio: the profile photos and free-text bio you upload.
  • Messages: the content of chats you send to other members.
  • Usage and diagnostics: how you interact with the app, and crash or error reports, used to keep the app working and improve it.
  • Device information: a device push token, so we can send the notifications you enable.

How we use your information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your sensitive information for advertising.

  • To create and manage your account and verify you are 18 or older.
  • To build your profile and match you with compatible roommates.
  • To let you and your matches view profiles and exchange messages.
  • To send notifications you have turned on (such as new knocks and new messages).
  • To keep RoomRight safe, prevent abuse, and diagnose and fix problems.
  • To comply with legal obligations.

How we protect your information

No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we work to protect your information using industry-standard safeguards.

  • Your most sensitive questionnaire answers are encrypted at the field level before they are stored.
  • Chat messages are end-to-end encrypted, so they are readable only by you and the person you are messaging. This includes messages you later edit or delete — see "Editing and deleting messages" below.
  • Your login session is stored in the device Keychain, not in general app storage.
  • Data is transmitted over encrypted (HTTPS) connections.

Information visible to other members

RoomRight is a matching service, so some information is shown to other members to help you connect. Your profile — including your first name, age, photos, bio, and the preferences relevant to matching — may be visible to potential roommates. Anything you send in a chat is shared with the member you are messaging. Please only share what you are comfortable making visible to other members.

Service providers we share with

We use trusted providers to operate RoomRight. They may process your information only to provide services to us and are required to protect it:

  • Supabase — secure database, authentication, and photo storage.
  • Apple and Google — Sign in with Apple and Google sign-in.
  • Google Maps Platform — location suggestions when you type a city or neighborhood.
  • PostHog — privacy-conscious product analytics.
  • Sentry — crash and error reporting.
  • OpenRouter and Anthropic — generate the short "Roommate Snapshot" summary shown to your matches.
  • Our backend, hosted on Vercel, which coordinates these services.

How the Roommate Snapshot uses AI

When you open someone's profile, RoomRight shows a short written summary of how the two of you would live together — the "Roommate Snapshot". To produce it, some of your questionnaire answers and some of theirs are sent together to an AI provider (OpenRouter or Anthropic), along with how our own compatibility scoring rated the two of you. The text that comes back is stored once for that pair and shown to both of you. If a summary about the pair cannot be produced, we fall back to a short summary of one person's living style.

Sensitive answers are removed before anything is sent, for both people and by the same rule. Names, contact details, date of birth, age, gender, gender preference, pronouns, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, relationship status, nationality and income are stripped out at the point the request is built, not merely left out of the instructions given to the model. What is left describes habits and preferences — cleanliness, sleep and work rhythm, guests, noise, how each person raises a problem. The summary is regenerated when either of you changes an answer that affects it.

The summary is written about the pair, so it necessarily reflects what the other person said as well as what you said. It is shown only to the two of you, and never to anyone else.

Editing and deleting messages

You can edit a message for a short time after sending it, and you can delete a message for everyone within an hour of sending it. When you edit a message, the person you are messaging sees the updated text marked as edited. When you delete a message for everyone, it is removed from the conversation for both of you and they see only that a message was deleted.

We keep a copy of the original message in a restricted archive that no other member can ever access. We do this so that if a conversation is reported to us, deleting a message cannot be used to erase it before it can be reviewed. That copy stays end-to-end encrypted, which means we cannot read it. It is removed when your account is deleted.

Data retention and deletion

We keep your information for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Delete account. Deleting your account removes your profile and associated personal data from our systems, except where we must retain limited information to comply with legal obligations or resolve disputes. You can also disable notifications at any time in Settings.

Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal information, to withdraw consent, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You can review and edit most of your information in the app, delete your account in Settings, or contact us using the email below to make a request. We will respond in line with applicable law, including the GDPR and CCPA where they apply.

Age requirement

RoomRight is only for adults. You must be 18 or older to create an account, and we ask for your date of birth to confirm this. RoomRight is not directed to, and we do not knowingly collect information from, anyone under 18. If we learn that we have collected information from someone under 18, we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date and, where appropriate, notify you in the app. Your continued use of RoomRight after an update means you accept the revised policy.
